This worm can eat plastic waste25 April 2017Scientists at Cambridge University say a caterpillar who can eat bee hive can also eat plastic.This can be effective treatment of insect pest control.In the experiment it was discovered that this worm breaks the chemical structure of plastic in the same way as it digests the bee hive.Every year, eight million tons of plastic polyethylene are produced around the world.This plastic is used in shopping bags, food packaging industry. केम्ब्रिज यूनिवर्सिटी के वैज्ञानिकों का कहना है मधुमक्खी का छत्ता खा लेने वाला एक कैटरपिलर प्लास्टिक भी खा सकता है.
प्लास्टिक खाने वाला ये कीड़ा प्रदूषण का कारगर इलाज हो सकता है.
प्रयोग में ये पता चला कि ये कीड़ा प्लास्टिक की केमिकल संरचना को उसी तरह से तोड़ देता है जैसे मधुमक्खी के छत्ते को वह पचा लेता है.
हर साल दुनिया भर में आठ करोड़ टन प्लास्टिक पॉलीथिन का उत्पादन किया जाता है.
इस प्लास्टिक का इस्तेमाल शॉपिंग बैग, फूड पैकेजिंग इंडस्ट्री में किया जाता है. लेकिन इनके पूरी तरह से गलने में सैकड़ों साल लग जाते हैं.

लेकिन गैलेरिया मेलोनेला नाम का ये कीड़ा प्लास्टिक बैग में घंटे के भीतर ही सुराख कर सकता है.
यूनिवर्सिटी ऑफ केम्ब्रिज के बायोकेमिस्ट डॉक्टर पाओलो बॉम्बेली इस शोध से जुड़े हुए हैं.
वे कहते हैं, "ये कैटरपिलर तो एक शुरुआत है. हमें ये समझने की जरूरत है कि वो इसे कैसे अंजाम देते हैं. हमें उम्मीद है कि प्लास्टिक कचरे की समस्या को कम करने के लिए कोई तकनीकी समाधान मुहैया कराया जा सकेगा."
